Living with Sickle Cell Anemia.....
Saturday 07-26-2008 3:26pm ET
I always like to think that the audience deserves to know the real person behind the microphone. Well I am living with SSD (Sickle Cell Disease). I recently was hospitalized because of the disease.... yeah I missed a Saturday... but anyway. Sickle Cell awareness month is coming up and I can't wait. We often hear in the media about AIDS and HIV, not to say they aren't important, but SSD is the 3rd leading disease that African Americans are succeptable to. AIDS, Heart Disease, SSD. Not to mention, the state of Georgia is one of the leading states for the disease. So ok... what is SSD ???
Africans suffered harshly from Malaria, and because of this the bodies natural defense was to curve the blood cells so that the disease wouldn't spread throughout the body. But because of this, Sickle cell was the leading disease. SSD is a GENETIC disease that causes the blood cells to sickle or, turn into a sickle shape (macaroni shells). You can't get it from touching or sharing body fluids, it's carried in your DNA. Regular blood cells are shaped like Cheerios for instance. So , because of the shape, blood cells cannot carry sufficient amount of oxygen to body organs, and they often get caught in the tiny blood vessels in our bodies. The body parts that don't receive this oxygen begin to hurt and throb because of the pain. Pain, is the number one factor for the disease. This pain cannot be treated by over the counter drugs, and most often results in frequent hospital visits for most patients. The severity of the disease can range, some people rarely hurt, while others have suffered strokes, transplants and have had body organs fail because of the disease.
About 1 in 3 African Americans have what's called the sickle cell trait. The trait just means you have a strand of DNA that carries the disease. BUT, two people who have the trait have a 1 in 4 chance of passing it on the their off spring. THERE IS NO CURE FOR SSD!!!!! There are many treatments, but no cure. SO.... *****Break the cycle***** Get tested for the trait as well as any other disease. It could mean the difference between a life time of PAIN

Yeah I'm Young But....
I know many people are thinking, "What does this young college girl know about R&B?" Well, I will give credit to my mother and grandmother for making me have an old spirit. I was raised on good music, music that had meaning and soul. Now, not to get me wrong I do like a selection of todays music. But you can ask my mother herself, if you could rob me of my ipod right now, you would hear a great selection of R&B. I love older music, because it gives me time to think and it has meaning. I really can't think straight when I'm listening to shake this and drop that. But I can think when I'm listening to the Commodores, or Luther or Sade. I also don't feel degraded or less than a woman, and mostly misrepresented when I listen to Hip hop. I never feel misrepresented when I listen to R&B and thats why I'm a radio personality.
Independence Day... What it means to me!
Friday 07-04-2008 1:43pm ET
Independence day... 4th of July.. or whatever you want to call it, is to some people another day to be off work, eat, barbecue, drink. But really I can't imagine living any place else and not having the freedoms that I take for granted. I realized just what "independence" day meant when my dad returned home from Afghanistan in 2007. Superficial things come to light when a situation really hits home. I never doubted that my dad would not come back safe, but there was always that "what if??" Him leaving and having to talk to us every so often made me realize just what a sacrifice soldiers make to us in order to secure our freedom. So that's what Independence day means to me.
